The post

Environmental campaigns lose when they are abstract and win when they are about a place people know. The film is not about the climate; it is about this creek, this trail, this stand of trees, and the neighbors who showed up on a Saturday to do something about it.

The Kansas City angle

Kansas City's environmental work is concrete and local: the Blue River and Brush Creek cleanups, the Missouri River access projects, the Heartland Conservation Alliance and Bridging The Gap volunteer days, the tree-planting drives on the east side, the trail networks in Johnson County and the Northland, the stormwater and green-infrastructure fights in the older neighborhoods.

The local angle is the before and after. A Kansas City crew can film the creek in March and again in October, and the film that shows the change is the one that gets the next grant.

One site, one work day, one return visit

We would film a volunteer work day at the site: the sign-in table, the tools, the first hour of work, the moment the pile of trash or the row of new trees becomes visible. Short interviews with the organizer, a long-time volunteer and a neighbor who lives across the street. Then a short return visit in a different season to film what changed.

A two-minute campaign film for the petition, the grant and the annual appeal; a sixty-second volunteer recruiting cut; and the before-and-after as a vertical that will do the most work of anything on the organization's feed.

What to actually make

  • A two-minute campaign film — the place, the work day, the change, the ask.
  • A volunteer recruiting cut — what a work day is like, for the sign-up page.
  • Before-and-after verticals — the same frame in two seasons.
  • Policy-ask pieces — thirty seconds for the council hearing or the petition drive.

What it costs in Kansas City

For most of the businesses in this post the right starting point is the Story Film at $4,500: a full shoot day with interviews, cut into a two-to-three-minute film. Every package is published on our nonprofit video page, and the video production cost page explains what moves the number up or down. There is no travel fee anywhere in the metro, Overland Park to Lee's Summit to Lawrence.

How the shoot works

It is the same two people on every project, Josh and Brandon. We scope it on a call, write the shot list, show up with lights and a lav mic, and stay out of the way of your customers. A first cut lands in about two weeks with unlimited revisions after that, and you own every frame, including the raw footage on request.

If this is your business, the nonprofit video page has the packages, the examples and the calendar link. If you are not sure which package fits, this is how we work and why the prices are on the site.
